(Shenandoah) THE River Wall
This wall is on the southern
side of the Shenandoah River just upstream of the 340 bridge. The red, green,
and blue arrows indicate crack climbs. The yellow arrow points at a bolted face
climb. All three cracks are trad leadable. The climbs are approximately 35-45
ft high.
RED – Looks to be about 5.6 but
is full of vegetation in the summer. Watch out for poison ivy.
YELLOW – Bolted face climb about
5.10/11 on incut crimps. “Shutterbug”
GREEN – This crack does not have
protection in the bottom 15 ft. It looks to be in the 5.11 to 5.12 range and
takes small gear.
BLUE – “JAGGED CRACK” 5.9+ This
crack has great cam placements. It is more of a layback than a jam crack. Up to
#4 BD cams. Tree for anchor.
The river water level needs to
be low to access the cliff base. The only other option is to go in the dead of
a cold winter and use the ice that forms on the still water below the cracks to
walk to their base. Good Luck with that!
