THE FRONTIER
Virginia
– West Virginia
Bouldering

Bottom photo looks uphill towards the upper “Short Virginia
cliff” next to the frontier. Problem 7 is visible on the foreground arête.

The Frontier is a small
bouldering area at the left end of a larger cliff. This area has great rock
quality. The landings are sometimes rocky
so bring good pads for bouldering.
The Frontier is the only bouldering
in Harpers Ferry that is (as far as I can tell) in the state of Virginia.
In the above map the rectangular
gray area is part of the Widespot cliffs. The Widespot cliff sits 15 feet off
of Hwy 340. It is overhanging at the bottom and more vertical at the top.
Currently there are 2 or 3 trad climbs established on the right side, and
potential for many new lines. The oblong shaped gray area is the Paw Paw
overhang. The Paw Paw overhang also has many projects and a couple established
lines. This area will probably produce some hard roof climbs in the future.
On a hot day make sure to check
out the river boulders shown below this area.
